The power of safety
Unmatched safety for drivers, co-drivers and other road users
Unequalled safety
Road safety is a top priority in city distribution. That is why the New Generation DAF XD features a low cab position, a large windscreen and ultra-low belt lines, setting new standards in direct and indirect view, supported by state-of-the-art technologies such as the DAF Digital Vision System and the unique DAF Corner View. In addition, the completely new, robust cab structure, the suite of driver assistance systems and the class-leading ergonomics make the New Generation DAF XD the new industry leader in the distribution class when it comes to safety.
Exceptional direct and indirect view
Excellent direct view on the road is everything. Optimal indirect view is surely as important. Especially when urban roads are crowded and full of unprotected and unpredictable road users and sprinkled with objects like bollards, bicycle racks, fire hydrants and poles.
Meeting London Direct Vision Standard’s 5 star rating
No city in the world seems to be more determined to reduce the number of accidents between commercial vehicles and vulnerable road users than London does, reflected by the strict London Direct Vision Standard (DVS).
Although meeting the continuously tightening regulations is challenging for all manufacturers of especially medium and heavy-duty trucks, DAF fully supports the aim of the DVS: maximize the direct view from the driver position to boost road safety.
When equipped with the unique DAF Vision Door and DAF Corner View camera system, the New Generation DAF XD distribution trucks touches the maximum achievable 5 stars in the DVS. This illustrates the unique market position of the XD when it comes to direct view.
Primary driving functions are all operated from the steering wheel or column stalks. From engaging functions directly related to driving, to the operation of the digital display menu, from controlling the TraXon to the operation of audio and phone, everything is at the driver’s fingertips.
Secondary driving functions can be operated from physical switches on the ergonomically laid out dashboard.
Smart active safety features
The New Generation DAF includes a whole range of functions to maximise active safety. These include Brake Assist, Lane Departure Warning System, Emergency Brake Lights and DAF Turn Assist. We’ve also added new features like the DAF Electronic Park Brake for smart park brake control, a Low Speed Trailer Brake for safe trailer coupling and uncoupling, and Park Brake Assist for additional park braking power which helps out in a multitude of situations.
Alcohol Interlock Preparation
An alcohol interlock preparation will be installed in all New Generation DAF trucks: the standardised interface and connection are already fitted. The control unit blocks the starter if the detected alcohol value is above a set limit. Engine start is possible to use cab climate control if the parking brake is applied. The DAF Breathalyser itself is available from PACCAR Parts and can be ordered through a DAF dealer.
Forward Collision Warning
Forward Collision Warning (FCW) generates a warning sound and a visual alert on the instrument panel, urging the driver to take action in order to prevent a collision.
DAF Corner View
The DAF Corner View is an option to replace the kerb and front view mirrors and which exceeds the field of vision of these conventional mirrors by far. It is another important feature to further enhance road safety, especially for vulnerable road users. The display of the DAF Corner View is mounted on the co-driver’s A-pillar, exactly where one expects it to be.
DAF Digital Vision System
With the DAF Digital Vision System (DDVS) you can replace the main and wide angle mirrors with retractable cameras mounted high on the cab to provide an optimal view in all weather conditions. Monitors are ergonomically positioned on the left and right side of the cab interior, and with features like auto panning, extrawide-angle view and defrosting, the DDVS makes for safe and easy manoeuvring.
Predictive Cruise Control
Predictive Cruise Control uses GPS technology to determine the exact location of the truck and the expected driving conditions up to the next 2 kilometres. It uses this information to determine the ideal speed within a specified range.
Rear View Camera
The Rear View Camera helps the driver avoid collisions when reversing. It is activated automatically when reverse gear is engaged and will display video from the camera on the additional display in the cab. The camera is mounted on the rear of the rigid truck or tractor unit.
Drive-off Assist
Warns driver of vulnerable road users in front of vehicle before driving off or when driving.
Event Data Recorder
Records images and data when the ABS brake warning is activated; data can be downloaded when needed.
DAF Drowsiness Detection
Assesses the driver’s alertness and warns when a break is needed.
Speed Limit Recognition
Informs the driver about actual speed limits.
Advanced Emergency Braking System
Advanced Emergency Braking System can provide up to full autonomous emergency braking to assist with collision avoidance of both stationary and moving vehicles from a speed of up to 80 km/h.
Automatic Lighting Selection
This standard feature automatically activates the main beam in harsh and dark driving conditions. In case of rain also the wipers are activated automatically. All vehicle lights, including those of the trailer, can be easily checked through the remote control in the vehicle key.
Full LED lighting
DAF was the first in the truck industry to introduce LED technology for its headlights and is now implementing it to the full extend on front, side and rear lighting. It provides highest quality for best vision and visibility, thus safety.
Adaptive Cruise Control
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) automatically adjusts the truck’s speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
DAF Turn Assist
DAF Turn Assist notices cyclists or pedestrians when the vehicle is making a turn. At higher speeds the system alerts the driver when motor cycles or cars are in the blind zone when changing lanes or merging. DAF Turn Assist applies visual and audible warnings, even in poor visibility conditions.
DAF Electronic Park Brake
A new optional safety feature that automatically engages the park brake when, for instance, the engine is turned off.
Lane Departure Warning
The Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) warns the driver if the vehicle begins to move out of the lane as a result of driver error, drowsiness or distraction.
Low Speed Trailer Brake
Guarantees safe trailer coupling and decoupling by activating the trailer brakes independently.
Park Brake Assist
Engages all brakes next to the parking brake to ensure that the truck won’t move during loading or unloading with a crane or whilst operating a tipping body.
Tyre Pressure Monitoring
The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System ensures continuous monitoring of the pressure and temperature of all tyres. The system generates warnings when the pressure of a single tire is low, or the temperature is high, enabling the driver to take swift action.
Vehicle Stability Control
The electronic braking system features Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) to prevent jack-knifing and overturning.
Extremely strong, robust cab structure
The New Generation DAF trucks have a completely new and extremely strong, robust cab structure that protects against impact on all sides. At the front, energy-absorbing crash boxes are integrated for maximum protection. Crash zones in the back of the cab protect against moving loads, keeping the working place of driver safe. The roof has been reinforced to maximally protect the cab occupants in case of a roll over.
ProCaDis Safety System
DAF’s unique and patented Programmed Cab Displacement System (ProCaDis) is allowing a 400 millimeters XD cab displacement on the chassis during a front collision, to absorb the energy and prevent the cab from detaching. As a result, ProCaDis maintains the cab structure and maximizes the survival space for vehicle occupants.
CoDeS Safety System
DAF’s Controlled Steering Column Deformation System (CoDeS) ensures that the steering wheel moves away from the driver, for instance in the case of a trailer-back collision. The driver's knees are protected by impact absorbing zones in the dashboard of the New Generation XD.
